Clinicians such as RNs, PTs, and OTs have been introduced to wound management in school, but the mastery of advanced techniques would depend on exposure in their daily practice. This course will provide clinicians an understanding of advanced techniques such as sharp debridement and multiple application techniques of negative pressure wound therapy. This course will also demonstrate the importance of rehabilitation in the wound care multidisciplinary team.

Dr. LaRaus is a 1992 graduate of Hunter College’s Physical Therapy Program in New York. He obtained his post professional doctorate of physical therapy at the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey, May 2008. 1. Debridement

This chapter will briefly review the different types of debridement but mainly focuses on the indications, contraindications, advantages, and disadvantages of sharp debridement. Multiple videos showing the application of sharp debridement (cross hatching, callus shaving, and other techniques) will also be incorporated and reviewed.

2. Negative Pressure Wound Therapy

This chapter will provide the participants with a practical understanding of the application of negative wound therapy treatment. The chapter will provide the participant with the background information, indications, contraindications, advantages, and disadvantages of negative pressure wound therapy as well as different applications, such as: straight forward application, bridging technique to allow for improved patient function, “Y” connector application, and “protection technique."

3. There is No “I” in Team: Joining Forces with Undervalued Players

This chapter will focus how to utilize physical therapists on a multi-disciplinary team. The therapists today are the experts in the field of exercise, movement ADLs, and a range of modalities. This chapter will focus on the history of rehabilitation specialists in wound management and how your team can be enhanced by their addition.
