Chapters & learning objectives
1. Review of the Wound Healing Process as It Relates to Complex Injuries
It is vital that therapists possess an understanding of the wound healing process when evaluating patients with complex injuries. This chapter will review the stages of wound healing in relation to various structures involved in complex elbow injuries.
2. Anatomy and Biomechanics of the Elbow
A brief review of anatomy and biomechanical studies will be presented to increase understanding of each structure that may be involved in the injury begin treated. Addressing noninvolved structures will also be addressed to prevent unnecessary joint contractures and muscle weak-ness that can further limit occupational performance.
3. Special Considerations When Evaluating Complex Elbow Injuries
The IHI Triple Aim of health care and the roles that occupational and physical therapists play in achieving this is discussed. Health literacy will be introduced and explored in regard to performing a holistic evaluation of the patient. This emerging topic and its impact on therapeutic outcomes will be discussed.
