How can the sports therapist effectively and safely manage sports medicine? This course by Dr. Todd Arnold provides a detailed overview of the body’s response to medication. Dr. Arnold first introduces the intimate relationship of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics to athletic medicines and then explores how a drug interacts and passes through the athlete. Common athletic medicines are then explored in depth, including appropriate usage and management. Through this in-depth course, Dr. Arnold will prepare the sports physical therapist to approach the effective management and understanding of athletic medicines through detailed course materials, dynamic graphics, and a question-and-answer session with physical therapist Dr. Katie Whetstone. This is the first course in a two-part series and should be viewed in sequential order.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics
This chapter covers both the kinetics and dynamics of a chemical, creating an understanding for the clinician to use when athletes are consuming medications. This is an understanding that must be part of the skill set, as it will be applied frequently, from the injured athlete to those who are postoperative.
2. Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)
This chapter will cover Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs covering dynamics, kinetics and side effects. A specific review of aspirin will also be covered.
3. Pain Medications
Chapter 3 will focus on pain medications often encountered by the sports clinician. This will include opioids and tramadol, two common drugs in postoperative and acute injury settings.
